A Cut Above - Silver City Leadership Track reaches out to the teens at Silver City church in the 9th through 12th grades to challenge them and help them develop a sense of ownership and responsibility for their futures. The group meets with their mentors on Tuesday evenings at the CATS Center on Main St from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The evening begins with a one-on-one Bible study with their leader for 45 minutes. Following this individual time the group meets together where everyone focuses on some type of Job or Life Skill training for another 45 minutes.
The first night of the program the group time is devoted to a presentation on goal setting and the teens and their leaders are then given time to focus on setting some Lifetime and short-term goals. Each week the teens are encouraged to review the goals they set for last week and set new ones for the coming week.
Another focus of this year's program will be the requirement of each participant to read the autobiography of Booker T. Washington entitled, Up From Slavery. Each participant is given a book at the first of the year to read and must turn that back in at the end of the year to be eligible for the end-of-the-year trip. The group will also look at a number of opportunities for service throughout the year as well.
Of course, a mainstay of the program is still the memorization and recitation of a weekly Bible verse. For the program the teens have a choice of memorizing a Proverb from a selection given them or a selection from the Gospel of Mark that is relevant to that weeks sermon.
